about

These two ballets mark the beginning of my professional career. I was discovered so to speak by the great Martha Hill as I was standing in front of my locker on the 5th floor of the Juilliard School. I was drafted by Miss Hill sight unseen. She spotted me ask me to follow her and gave me my first commission. Danny Lewis, Jose Limon’s rehearsal director, was searching for music to add to the dance compilation celebrating his years of work with the esteemed Limon. Martha asked me if I wanted to compose for the project she never even heard my music! I of course said yes but there was one caveat. She wanted music in 16 days so I said yes and had it in Danny’s hands at the prescribed time. Here it is I am proud to state that I was on the same bill with Paul Taylor and Antony Tudor.
Danny and I went on to do another ballet ‘Textured Lightening’ which premiered at the Riverside Church in Manhattan. That was the beginning of my experimenting with loop composition. The featured voice is none other than the famed Michael Dash also of Juilliard who in former times was the boy soprano on Crumb’s Ancient Voices of Children with mezzo-soprano Jan DeGaetani. He was a marvelous talent unfortunately has died from aids rampant at that time.
I felt the need to provide both a vocalized and non vocalized version of for ‘Textured Lightening’ to better hear and observe the looping, primitive but effective for that time.
