    Piano Variations is a variation set drawn from a theme of extended length.
    The theme proceeds in dramatic gestures decorated by unprepared bursts of material in high registers. Each following occurrence of the theme states the theme in a particular characteristic fashion. First the register of the theme is displaced with large chordal structures evoking the sound mass of a jazz pianist.

    Each thematic appearance cadences on a held C# structure of ambiguous tonality. The second appearance focuses attention on the sententious triplet rhythm in augmentation with Oscar Peterson allusions as non-sequitorial intrusions.

    Thematic relief is established with the sudden announcement of an extraneous tune at bar 62 that is stopped from all motion by half note triplet chords. It is itself developed and cadences into a linear announcement of the original theme in strict two-voice dialogue. This closes quietly to set up the finale of rich jazz chords in Gershwin rhythms that courses down from high register into a held chord with a brief melodic fragment that echoes the grand announcement of the theme at the beginning of the composition.     ... more
